Do The Write Thing Writing Challenge
Communities in Schools of Chicago
Calling all 6, 7, and 8 graders! Do you have ideas on the causes of youth violence in your community? Do you have solutions you want to share? Then Do the Write Thing is the writing challenge for you!
Do the Write Thing gives you an opportunity to amplify your thoughts, ideas, and solutions to youth violence. By responding to three prompts: How has violence affected my life? What are the causes of youth violence? And what can I do to reduce youth violence, you are sharing your ideas with volunteer readers who include civic leaders, business leaders and leaders and members of your own community who want to hear from you.
Your writing can be an any format you choose-fiction or nonfiction, poem, story, play, essay, anything! What’s more is that your writing will not be scored based on spelling or grammar, rather the content of your words and your connection to your writing.
The top 100 Chicago student authors with their parent and teacher are honored at a local recognition dinner in May. Here, we will announce our National Student Ambassador to travel to Washington, D.C., to meet other Student Ambassadors from across the country, see the sites, and meet with your local representatives.
Your words matter and Do the Write Thing is a chance to have your voice heard.
Submissions are due by January 31, 2025.
