Capoeira Angola: From Resistance to Resilience

International Capoeira Angola Foundation -Chicago

The 3-hour workshop is focused on exposure to new forms of expressions and ways to cope with stress and trauma. Capoeira has multiple components that encourage physical as well as musical coordination. Participants will learn to play one of several various percussive instruments unique to capoeira, and they will learn to sing a couple of songs in Portuguese. They will learn how to do basic movements that can help increase their core body strength, awareness and control. Through learning the history of capoeira, they will be activated to advocate for themselves and their communities, particularly on issues of inequities and injustice. What we hope to achieve in this workshop is to promote community action and address self-care as well as social wellness, so that participants are able to achieve a sense of stability and wellbeing. At the end of the workshop, they will walk away (hopefully on their hands- we do lots of handstands) with an understanding of how to play this ingenious bodily martial arts game. #RemakeDaysCHI
