Designed Objects: Toy Design/3D Model
School of the Art Institute of Chicago
This fun and challenging course offers students the opportunity to draw, sculpt, digitally model, and prototype their own action figure. First, students develop a character through a series of traditional illustrations and models. Once a final design is chosen, students draw the toy version of the character to scale using drafting conventions and equipment. Using 3D modeling software, students then produce a 3D model of their toy based on their drawings. In addition, students conceptualize and develop the toy's accessories and packaging. Finally, a plastic prototype of each character is made using 3D printing technology at SAIC's Advanced Output Center. Trips to the Art Institute of Chicago, artist presentations, and field trips to surrounding businesses to research toy design supplement the studio experience. *Basic drawing and computer experience helpful, but not required.
