History at Union Ridge Cemetery

Chicago Public Library

Union Ridge Cemetery is a cornerstone of the Northwest Side and especially of Norwood Park. Established in 1841, it remains the oldest continuously operating cemetery in Cook County. Within its grounds stands a savanna of Bur Oak trees that predate the founding of the United States of America itself. Generations of settlers and families from the surrounding communities left their mark on this area, and many now rest at Union Ridge Cemetery. This program explores the rich history of the Northwest Side through the stories of its people, homes, schools, stores, churches, and streets. Together, we will reconnect with the names and places that shaped Norwood Park and much of Chicago's North Side, helping to reweave the historic fabric of the community and preserve its legacy for future generations.
