Sacred Keepers Youth Council - Sacred Keepers Sustainability Lab
After School Matters
During Summer 2015, SKSL seeks to engage youth on experiences and projects that will serve a vehicle for youth to learn the value and social practice of public art and community beautification. Two days a week, youth will focus on the importance of urban ecology and art, creating monarch butterfly habitats that will be used to support monarch conservation and as a resource to facilitate science inquiry investigations. This project will work in tandem with the creation of a public mural placed in the midst of the habitat that will be both designed and installed by youth, facilitated by a contracted, professional muralist. By learning to manually integrating nature and art into the urban landscape reconnects participants to their natural surroundings by weaving the connection between the environment and creative expression that fosters opportunities for positive, proactive community reinvestment.
