The Short of It: A Short Story Book Club
Chicago Public Library
A different kind of book club focusing on narratives that can be read in a single sitting. Short stories are a great way to explore genres, authors, and ideas without the commitment of a longer book. Read a unique story every month and meet virtually with other adults for discussion.
This month's story is "Godmother Tea" by Selena Anderson. It is available to read in The Best American Short Stories 2020 or online from Oxford American . "A young, Black woman named Joy lives in a city apartment filled with unwanted furniture gifted to her by her mother. Most recently, Joy's mother gave her a gaudy mirror. In the mirror, Joy sees "fragments of other women" in herself. She is often visited by her "godmother," whom she describes as "like an ancestor who never really left." The godmother often appears in Joy's apartment as an apparition, interrogates her about what's going on in her life, and gives her unsolicited advice and criticism." - Writing Atlas
