The Zena Sutherland Lecture: Presented by Renee Watson
Chicago Public Library
At its heart, the Zena Sutherland Lecture honors Zena Sutherland's legacy, celebrates leading voices in children's and young adult literature, and strengthens the vibrant community that makes it all possible.
This hybrid event is a space for connection, learning, and community, bringing together children's literature professionals, educators, families and fans. While the lecture is designed for adults, all are welcome!
We'd love to have you join us on Friday, May 2, 2025, when Renee Watson will present the Sutherland Lecture. There will be a free reception afterwards with refreshments and conversation-a chance to meet fellow book lovers, share ideas and build lasting connections. Please note there will be no book sales or book signing. Renee Watson is a #1 New York Times bestselling author who, over the past decade, has authored twenty books for young readers, which have collectively sold more than a million copies. She received a Coretta Scott King Award and a Newbery Honor for her novel Piecing Me Together and high praise for 1619 Project: Born on the Water , co-written with Nikole Hannah-Jones. Her debut adult novel, Skin & Bones , was published in May 2024. Watson is on the Council of Writers for the National Writing Project and is a member of the Academy of American Poets' Education Advisory Council. She splits her time between Portland, Oregon and New York City. The Zena Sutherland Lecture is co-sponsored by Chicago Public Library, the Sutherland Lecture Committee and University of Chicago Laboratory Schools.
