Zine Workshop with Jon Salazar

Learn about photo zines and how to make your own. This 3-part workshop will teach you photography and zine layout skills, resulting in a published group photo zine. Online registration is required. Attendees are asked to attend all three sessions.The first workshop on Thursday, October 3, 2024, will be an introduction by photographer Jon Salazar to photo zines and books. 1990s photo documentation of the Pilsen neighborhood by Japanese photographer Akito Tsuda will be shared. Jon will offer tips on photography and documenting family and neighborhood life. Each participant will receive a disposable camera to photograph with for the following two weeks.The cameras will be collected from participants for processing at the second workshop on Thursday, October 17, 2024. Jon will demonstrate how to sequence and layout a photo zine. Binding techniques such as Japanese book binding will be discussed and demonstrated.Attendees will receive their processed photo prints and film negatives at the third workshop on Thursday, October 24, 2024. They will create page layouts with their photos, which will be printed in a compilation photo zine in November 2024.Online registration is required and is limited to 15 participants. This workshop will meet in person at the Little Village Branch from 6:00pm to 7:30pm on Thursday, October 3, October 17, and October 24, 2024. Participants are asked to attend all 3 workshops.This program is made possible by the Terra Foundation for American Art and is held in conjunction with the exhibit Akito Tsuda: Pilsen Days, currently on display at Harold Washington Library Center.
