LearnStorm Chicago Powered by Khan Academy
Chicago Public Schools
LearnStorm Chicago 2016 powered by Khan Academy is a free online math challenge designed to celebrate student progress and encourage a growth mindset right here in Chicagoland. Running from January 29 – April 1, 2016, students in grades 3-12 can practice math skills on khanacademy.org to earn real-life rewards and recognition for themselves and their school.
LearnStorm is for all learners and gives every student a chance to succeed, no matter their level. Students can earn two different types of points by practicing qualifying math missions on Khan Academy’s website: mastery and hustle points. Mastery points are earned for each skill practiced and every level of mastery earned. Hustle points are given out for practicing and sticking with skills that challenge you. Students are also encouraged to complete fun weekly activities designed to help them learn how to learn and develop a strong growth mindset.
LearnStorm is divided into three “cups,” and each “cup” is three weeks long. Points reset at the end of each cup, so even if you join after the first cup, you have a chance to win the second or third cup. Students and schools that top each of the leaderboards will receive real-life prizes and an opportunity to attend the final celebration in late April or early May.
