What do we Mean When we Talk About "The Chicago Accent?"
Chicago Public Library
When we think of a Chicago acent, we often conjure the image of SNL's parodic Bill Swerski chugging beer, eating sausages, and gabbing about "Da Bears." While this characterization is not inaccurate, it is incomplete--there are multiple ways to use language to say you're from Chicago without saying you're from Chicago. This talk presents a more inclusive linguistic picture of Chicago, drawing on sources from the Northern Cities Vowel Shift to Tik Tok. The program will be presented by Dr. Jill Hallett, Linguistics Professor, at the University of Illinois at Chicago. How to AttendThis event takes place in person.
