
JOB ANNOUNCEMENT MOPD OSC - Student Internship

The Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD) is excited to announce that we will be hiring three (3), college interns to assist with the facilitation of our MOPD Leadership Program through One Summer Chicago (OSC), 2022 Summer Internship Program! MOPD’s program is designed for transition-age students with disabilities and focuses on areas of advocacy, professional development, and disability rights.
Interns hired to facilitate this program will spend time with the OSC students in a virtual and/or hybrid setting and will generate conversation and learning opportunities ground in the background of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Self-Advocacy, and the History of the Disability Movement. Facilitators will also help students complete a final project and presentation at the end of their internship. MOPD is seeking hard-working, motivated, and creative college interns to collaborate with MOPD staff to provide OSC students a unique and valuable leadership opportunity.

Essential Duties/Skills Desired
- Ability to use effective communication in addressing large and small groups.
- Experience or interest in working with transition-aged students (experience working with students with disabilities preferred).
- Demonstrate strong leadership skills.
- Comfortability in using remote meeting/conferencing programs, i.e., MS Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, etc.
- Knowledge and ability to teach basic job readiness skills (resume writing and interviewing skills).
- Awareness of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the disability rights movement.
- Strong conflict resolution skills and ability to address concerns and enforce rules with students.
- Ability to enhance established curriculum and activities.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and work in a professional manner.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities.
- Possess the ability to establish a rapport with students, MOPD staff and contacts at site visits.
- Computer proficiency utilizing the internet for research, Word, Power Point, and social media.
- Computer proficiency in Google and Microsoft Office products, i.e., Word, Power Point, Excel, Google- Docs, Sheets, Slides and social media.
- Strong written communication so that information is relayed in a clear concise manner and ability to use different and creative ways to communicate with students with different learning styles.
- Must be reliable, organized and have a positive attitude.
- Willingness to accept direction/redirection and ask for help.
- Ability to handle a variety of situations and perform various clerical functions
- Ability to use public transportation for travel to organizations site visit/tours
- Ability to analyze and evaluate situations and exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to find creative ways engages students and facilitate group participation and discussion.

Hours:9:00 am – 3:30pm (Maximum of 20 hours per week)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, and Experience
• Must be a student in good academic standing currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or law school OR a student in good academic standing currently enrolled in an accredited business or data processing/ information technology school. Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 grading scale or a 3.5 on a 5.0 grading scale.
• Students must maintain the required GPA throughout the duration of their employment / internship
• Must be enrolled in school with a minimum of 6 credit hours (or quarter hour equivalency)
throughout the duration of internship, with the exception of academic breaks, i.e. summer
• Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications –Word, Excel and Power Point
NOTE: At time of application, you must attach a copy of your resume, current transcript with GPA OR if first term freshman/graduate student a letter of acceptance. You must provide Enrollment Verification at time of processing.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The candidate that possesses the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral interview, will be selected.
Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
- Bachelor level student majoring in Counseling, Rehabilitation, Social Work, Education, Special Education or a comparable Human/Social Services degree program
- Previous experience working with students with disabilities
- Proficiency with Microsoft/Google Office Software Word, Power Point, Excel, Google- Docs, Sheets, Slides
- Proficiency utilizing the internet for research and social media
Residency Requirement: All employees of the City of Chicago must be actual residents of the City as outlined in 2-152-050 of the City of Chicago Municipal Code. Proof of residency will be required.
