Habilitative Systems, Inc. serves individuals with mental illness and substance abuse challenges, youth and families at risk, veterans, seniors, ex-offenders, the homeless and those who are unemployed. HSI is the only organization on the west-side of Chicago that specializes in providing assistance to individuals with developmental disabilities and has created a unique social enterprise that produces packaging supplies while teaching important life skills and delivering supportive services to program participants. HSI uses a comprehensive multi-tiered approach that engages prevention, intervention, treatment, research, and care management to build healthy communities. Now in its 41st year, HSI employs over 100 staff members and has expanded its program matrix to include numerous health and human service initiatives such as the Conditional Release Program, Tabitha House for women in recovery, and the expansion mental health services into the Englewood community. The agency's current President and CEO, Donald J. Dew, has led the organization since 1990. The agency began by operating several programs previously managed by an affiliate of Claire Christian United Methodist Church, located at Pulaski and 15th Street, in the heart of the North Lawndale community. Among the early programs included Drake House Group Home for adolescent boys, Wesley Workshop, a sheltered employment facility for the disabled, and an outpatient substance abuse. Financial support comes from various foundations, corporations, individual gifts, and city, state and federal governmental entities.
