NVAM Education is dedicated to creating meaningful and transformative learning experiences for youth, educators and museum patrons. We promote connected learning through fine arts, civics, and youth facing interactive programming rooted in the exploration of personal narratives and global citizenship. The Emerging Artist Apprenticeship program allows teens interested in art, storytelling and digital media the opportunity to work in a museum environment. During the 6 week summer program teens create multi-media art projects, develop a new teen-focused blog and work one-on-one with veteran artists and museum professionals. Participants will work collaboratively and independently to create, mount and exhibit artwork at the museum. Professionally, teens will develop skills in arts administration, master a diverse range of art making techniques, learn how to analyze art in relationship to art history and theory, successfully display and document their artwork and create an online portfolio. Additionally teens will learn how to use art as a tool for social change, how to express themselves creatively and how to connect their own life stories to the artwork in our permanent collection while building dialogue with other artists and peers.

Criteria

1. Learners will demonstrate how to utilize different art making techniques, how to express themselves creatively and connect their own life stories to the artwork in the museum while building dialogue with other artists. Artistically, Learners will demonstrate skills in basic video/audio production and editing, digital photography, sculpture, mold making, painting and drawing. Learners will develop professional skills in arts administration, art history, and activism. Learners will leave the program with an online portfolio-in the form of a youth authored blog, an exhibit of their artwork at the museum and a researched and reflective artist statement about their experience.
