A student from the 6th grade participated in the inSTEM program for middle school girls where they learned about the logistics of the engineering process, acquired critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and gained knowledge about energy (kinetic, potential, solar, and circuits). The participant also was able to comprehend the concepts of renewable and nonrenewable resources, gain the understanding of gear ratios, and was able to collaborate well with her peers.

Criteria

  1. [required] The participant had to build their own solar panel car that had the ability to hold a egg and transfer the egg a distance in a safe manner. The participant used the engineering process in order to think about the problem, plan and create a design for their car, build the design, test out what they built, and then make any improvements if needed. Using the materials and tools (wood, gears, CD’s, spacers, hot glue, a motor, a battery pack, and a solar panel), the participant was able to make a functioning car that held an egg safely from point A to point B.
